Brother

“We’re meeting your new brother today, Alma.”

Her father’s voice echoed from the hallway. She pressed her hands on her lap and took a deep breath. While she was excited to be a big sister, she was nervous to welcome someone else in the family. Someone who might take away from the love she received from father. She let the breath out, willing that nothing would change.

They walked hand in hand, her and father, to the building where they would meet her brother. Father said his name was Tobor, which she thought was an odd name, but assumed he was from another country. Still, it was a name she hadn’t heard before. What would he look like? How would he sound? Would they get along? She wished mother was here, but hadn’t seen her in quite some time. Father said she probably wasn’t coming back.

Rounding the corner to the warehouse, they faced the large double doors.

“Are you ready to meet him, Alma?” Father asked, looking down at her. She looked up and nodded, and they entered.

Lines of robots stood along the walls. The entire place was dead silent. She swallowed. Father led to her a robot that looked like every other, a white shell with a bald head, blue, illuminated lights along where ears would be if it were human. But it wasn’t. Which was why Alma looked his way in wonder when Father placed her hand in the hand of the robot and said, “Meet Tobor. Your new brother.”
