The Fall

"We're in this together, but I'm not sure I can trust you." He confessed under his breath, as Sheila looked at him with angry eyes.

"I gave you. Everything." She said, breathing heavily with every word. "What the-- cut it out, Phil. I actually did everything right. I accomplish something like never before and that's what you say to congratulate me!" She said, her eyes wider than the air hole in the rope that let them hang freely around the cave. The small fire lantern that they lit was slowly burning out, getting smaller each time they talked.

“You’re different.” He said, breathing slowly as he wiggled his legs to back away. "I saw what you did in the box cart..." he said softly. Sheila had the same smirk on her face.

"Well if you need to know. They were gonna try to harm us. Many people want to because they all know what we found." She said tilting her head.

As Phil curiously turned his head toward her sagging bag as his rope slowly got looser and looser. He was oblivious of the situation and continued his gaze at what she was going to pull out. She looked evil, vengeful, she didn't seem like the sweet and adventurous girl that had started the whole expedition in the first place.

She looked at Phil, then looked at her bag. As she continued to do this, Phil's rope grew looser and looser. Noticing the grip loosen, Phil looked worried as he stopped and held a tight grip on his rope. Making sure he didn't fall.

Sheila pulled out a shiny and glossy stack of pure gold. Phil looked in shock. He gulped as he gripped tighter on his rope. He was breathing heavily and feared the fall.

"You know where I got this?' Sheila asked. She presented herself with a slight smirk and inhaled before repeating herself. "I mean, you know where I got this. From the community archives... I mean it's not like they need it. Can't catch a break, no one would know it was us."

Phil eyes were wide. His gaze at her grew longer but this time in shame. His breath grew faster and faster as his grip loosened.

"Us? No no no that...that was all you! I had no part of this and I don't intend to be."

"Oh would you stop being an idiot and appreciate pay day! We deserve this."

"See..." He said under his breath. "You have the guts to steal from the archives, I mean look at you now. I can't even trust that you wouldn't push me off." His voice was now shaky of fear. Sheila looked down and then looked around in shame. "No no I... I didn't mean that..." Phil said. "I really didn't. You wouldn't do that I... I... I don't know what came over me."

Sheila looked at him with sad eyes and reached out her hand. She pulled over toward him and looked down at his waist, catching a glimpse of his now very loose rope. "I'm sorry if I scared you... I mean no. Harm." She said. Still holding out her hand she said, "So I give you this."

After everything she gave him a slight push. His rope wiggled from off his body and he fell off the hanging ropes. He screamed as he went down. As tears flooded his eyes and glare flooded hers as she smirked.

"You held me back."
