One Ring

“Hello?”

“Hi, wow I can’t belive it’s you. It’s been different and I will admit that. I’ve been on a few dates and none of them seem capable of taking your place sadly. You’re gone, you’ve moved on. So why coudn’t I?

The place is still dirty and your purple checkered underwear still hangs neatly on the dresser everyday. It smells like roses here.

“Rose.”

“Rianne’s calling me, I’ll be right back please don’t hang up.”

“But-“

“Don’t hang up, just trust me.”

“Who are you talking to Rose?” Rianne asks, quickly brushing my hair out of my face with her cold and soft hands. She was my best friend. I attended her funeral a week after I attended Phil’s. The ring I still tightly plastered across my finger, it just fits better now.

“Phil.” I say swiftly, awaiting my return to the phone. My eyes teary after saying that name and seeing Rose at the same time.

“Darling you’re crying, what’s the matter…” she was weak and I could feel it. Wiping my eyes I rush to the medicine cabinet, quickly getting the orange pills that don’t have a faded label. “Thank you, oh Phil. The one with the glasses from chem. Fat Phil? You wouldn’t and I’m making a fool of myself even thinking it.”

I nodded my head. “You know you shouldn’t call him that. Your guilt doesn’t come now but it does really soon.” I looked at her with a shy smile. “I best not keep him waiting, I said running back to my bedroom.” I turned back to see Rianne look at me, he pills were falling out of her hand. “Wait, um… Rianne. I love you. Thank you for being the best best friend I could ever have.” With that I hugged her and a wave of nostalgic thoughts came back to me. I squeezed her tight then ran back to her room, tugging on my shorts that were attached to her belt.

“Hello are you still there—“

There was no response. I angrily slammed my fist against the dresser and tears rolled down my face. My eyes started to sting and the runnning nose came after. Rose came in, she glanced at my state still confused with why I was crying. She hesitantly came over to me, grabbing my nose with the middle parts of her fingers. “Get the tissue before your nose runs away.” She said playfully. It was something my mom used to say. “I’ll make some tea she said softly before exiting the room.

“Hello, hello—“

The phone had made that noise. I quickly got out immediately knowing it was Phil.

“Why’d you call me? I’m gonna hang up now…”

“NO—“

I yelled at the phone. “I meant… um, before you go, just um… I, I miss you. I love you and I always will. You probably think I’m crazy and you won’t understand. I just want you back. Goodbye.”

Her flowers were purple and his were green. I had one day with both Rianne and Phil in my high school days. and their absence to my present day hit my like a brick wall. I came back to his tombstone and I chuckled a bit. A flurry of tears followed after.

To my Rosie, I know I’m gone _but don’t hang up. _**_Trust me_**.”
